Target Population:

NRJC is a 19 bed co-ed pre-dispositional setting that primarily serves the northern panhandle.  All youth charged with alleged felonies are court ordered to NRJC.
Youth admitted to the center are between the ages of 10 to 18.
The counties served are:  Brooke, Hancock, Ohio, Marshall, Tyler and Wetzel.

Date of Operation:
NRJC opened in October of 1986 and is the only privately operated detention center in the state of West Virginia.

Licensing Information:

NRJC is contracted by the West Virginia Division of Juvenile Services and adheres to the same licensing requirements as the state operated facilities.

Mission Statement:
Northern Regional Juvenile Center is a secure pre-dispositional setting for youth with special circumstances and needs.  It is the goal of the staff and programming of Northern Regional Juvenile Center to treat each of the youth with the individual care and planning necessary to meet their special and basic needs while at the same time ensuring a safe environment free from abuse.

Description of Services

NRJC provides the following services for residents:

  • Case Management – Assessments, advocacy group and individual counseling
  • Education – On-site, year round classes provided by the WV Department of Education.  NRJC has two teachers and one guidance counselor. Grades are transferred to home school.
  • Medical – On-site registered nurse and a local physician provides medical care twice a week.  Registered nurse is on call 24-7.
  • Religious – Local ministers provide religious services weekly.
  • Recreation – Recreation, lifeskills and exercise programs are coordinated and supervised by a state certified athletic trainer who has a MA in physical education.
  • Transportation – All transportation of residents is provided by the WV Division of Juvenile Services academy trained officers.
  • Family Interaction – The center has visitation twice a week.  The center also provides the opportunity to eat dinner with their child once a month.  In addition to the visits and dinners; NRJC has a family fun night that occurs once a month.
  • Groups – Groups are conducted daily and address the following issues:  substance abuse, anger management and skill building techniques.

Staff

NRJC has 16 employees.  All officers must complete the West Virginia Division of Juvenile Services Juvenile Correctional Basic Academy.
