YSS Scholarships in Action
Our Goal
To build stronger communities throughout the Northern Panhandle by providing assistance for the pursuit of higher education opportunities for youth served by YSS in particular, as well as all area youth.
Goals 2009 Scholarship Program
- Provide assistance to all area youth curious about higher education.
- Make students and families aware of all possible scholarships and grants available.
- Solicit private funds for college application fees, travel expenses for college visits and general overhead cost.
Saturday Morning Scholarship/Financial Aid Workshop
- Sponsor Saturday morning workshop for all area youth and families.
- Include financial aid staff from local colleges, universities and private schools - including Wheeling Jesuit University, West Liberty State College, Bethany College, West Virginia Northern Community College and West Virginia Business College.
- Assist students and families with the FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid
- Area Colleges will waive fees for all that apply to their schools as a result of the Saturday morning workshop.
Community Participation
- If you work for a college, university, or private high school in the Northern Panhandle, encourage your institution to set aside one or more scholarships per year for young people served by YSS.
- The educational institution and YSS will work together to identify the students eligible for the scholarships. Your institution will work hand-in-hand with YSS to provide services to assure the student graduates.
- Fund a scholarship at a college, university, or private high school in the Northern Panhandle and stipulate that the recipient must be a low-income resident of an Ohio Valley community. YSS will assists in determining a likely pool of candidates for the scholarship.
- Donate money directly to YSS for the “Tomorrow’s Leaders” fund and all proceed will be used for scholarships for students.
- Mentor a College Student
- Many of these students are first generation college students.
- Help them pursue their goals by giving advice and encouragement, attending school functions, and/or helping with academic subjects.
- Support students in program completion, confidence building and transitioning to further education or the workforce.
