History

Youth Services System began in 1974 to offer new and innovative option to young people. Youth Services System’s Samaritan House was the first licensed emergency youth shelter in West Virginia. Our Transitional Living Program to teach and prepare older adolescents and young adults aging out in foster care needed skills for independent living was other first.

Youth Services System has served over 16,000 young people in the last 35 years.

In our Fiscal Year 2008, we served 219 girls and boys at Samaritan House and Helinski Shelter, with over 80% of these youth coming from our six panhandle counties. The Northern Regional Juvenile Center had 263 youth in their care, while our Community Childcare Center served 112 girls and boys during the fiscal year.
