Chicken or Spaghetti Dinner to Benefit Lazarus/Mary & Martha Houses
WHEELING — Aug. 26, 2019 — Youth Services System's Lazarus and Mary & Martha Houses invite the public to enjoy good food and fellowship from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling during its Chicken or Spaghetti Dinner Benefit for the sober living homes.
The two homes, located in Goosetown, house men and women, respectively, who are in active recovery from substance use disorder. There, they live in community, eating together, participating in recovery meetings and encouraging one another as they seek better mental and physical health, further education and/or gainful employment. Some arrive with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Through the generosity of Ohio Valley residents who donate goods to YSS, they receive clothing, shoes, a furnished room and food.
But most of all, they receive hope.
Josh, Lazarus House manager, shared his story: "I found myself homeless at 15, sleeping on friends’ couches and developing my addiction to pain pills, which led me to intravenous heroin use. I’ve taken to various drugs over the years that contributed to bringing me to my knees, but heroin kept me down in a hole. I never thought I would escape and recover due to having no support or safe haven to heal. That is until I placed a call to Lazarus House. A man named Pat answered and after hearing my situation told me not to worry, and that he would be along to collect me and my stuff in 10 minutes. Upon arriving I was welcomed with open arms and made to feel right at home. My recovery would not have been possible without Lazarus House, and to say I’m grateful would be a vast understatement."
Twice a year, the Lazarus and Mary & Martha Houses hold a chicken or spaghetti dinner (guests choose their entree) in collaboration with the Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling, located at 1610 Eoff St. The meal is $8 for adults and $4 for kids and includes either chicken, green beans and parsley potatoes or spaghetti, meatballs, coleslaw and breadsticks. Drinks (iced tea, juice, coffee, water) and desserts also are included. Take-outs are available by calling 304-670-1871.
